New Mexico is one of the four corner states that meet at right angles in the northwestern region of the United States, along with Colorado, Arizona, and Utah. It is bordered by Oklahoma to the northeast, Texas to the east, and Mexico to the south. The region was first visited by the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, who passed through between fifteen forty and fifteen forty two in search of gold. The first Spanish settlement was established along the Rio Grande River by Juan de Onate in fifteen ninety eight. Twelve years later, in sixteen ten, Santa Fe was founded and became the capital of New Mexico. The United States gained control of New Mexico in eighteen forty eight following the Mexican War and later acquired the southern portion of the territory through the Gadsden Purchase in eighteen fifty three. New Mexico officially became the forty seventh state on January sixth, nineteen twelve. Since nineteen forty five, the state has been a leader in scientific research and development, particularly at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory and Sandia Laboratories, known for advancements in geothermal, nuclear, and solar energy. New Mexico’s natural resources are abundant, with minerals such as uranium and potassium salts ranking among the richest in the United States. Other key resources include petroleum, copper, silver, gold, gas, and zinc. The state’s manufacturing sector also produces chemicals, transport equipment, wood, glass, and electrical products.
New Mexico is filled with unique landmarks that reflect its deep cultural and natural heritage. Abo Pueblo Ruins, located in Torrance County, feature a scenic half mile trail that explores the remains of ancient Native settlements. Acoma Pueblo, often called Sky City, is recognized as the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States, built atop a sandstone mesa more than three hundred feet high in Cibola County. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque displays artifacts and exhibitions about the history of Pueblo culture. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, also located in Albuquerque, features fascinating exhibits on dinosaurs and geology. The New Mexico State Capitol, known as the Roundhouse, is the only round state capitol building in the country. Other popular attractions include Old Town Albuquerque, a charming district filled with restaurants and shops, Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument, and the stunning White Sands National Monument, a 275 square mile landscape of brilliant white gypsum sand dunes.
