New Hampshire is located in the northeastern region of the United States and bordered by Massachusetts to the south, Vermont to the west, and Maine, along with a small stretch of the Atlantic Ocean, to the east. It also shares an international border with the Canadian province of Quebec to the north. The first English settlers were sent by Captain John Smith in 1623 under a land grant to establish a fishing colony near Rye and Dover along the Piscataqua River. Captain John Mason, one of the early founders, named the area New Hampshire and later contributed to the creation of Portsmouth in 1630. The state separated from Massachusetts in 1679 after thirty eight years of union, becoming its own colony. As a leader in the revolutionary cause, New Hampshire’s delegates were the first to vote for independence on July fourth, seventeen seventy six. The state gained international attention in 1905 when the Portsmouth Naval Base hosted the signing of the Treaty of Portsmouth, which ended the Russo Japanese War. New Hampshire was admitted to the Union on June twenty first, seventeen eighty eight, becoming the ninth state to ratify the Constitution. The capital is Concord and the largest city is Manchester. New Hampshire covers 9,304 square miles and has a population of about 1.5 million people as of twenty twenty four.
