Discover the Sunshine State: Florida - You will love it

FLORIDA

Florida, popularly known as the Sunshine State, is the third most populous state in the United States, covering about 65,755 square miles and home to over 23.3 million people as of 2024. Located in the southeastern part of the country, Florida joined the Union on March 3, 1845. The state flag, adopted in 1990, features a red cross of St. Andrew on a white background, with the state seal in the center depicting a Native American woman scattering flowers beneath a bright sun, surrounded by palm trees, a sailing steamboat, and tropical scenery. Florida’s capital is Tallahassee, while Jacksonville is the largest and most populous city.

The name “Florida” comes from the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, who landed there during the Easter season and named it “La Florida,” meaning “The Flowery.” Florida borders Alabama and Georgia to the north, the Gulf of Mexico to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Straits of Florida and Cuba to the south. With its subtropical climate, extensive coastline, and natural beauty, Florida has become a major hub for tourism, agriculture, and trade. The state’s location makes it one of the few in the continental U.S. that can boast both sunrise and sunset views over water.

Florida’s economy thrives on tourism, agriculture, and transportation. The state is famous for its amusement parks, orange groves, and the Kennedy Space Center. Tourism is one of Florida’s largest industries, employing over a million people and welcoming more than one hundred million visitors each year. The Greater Orlando area, home to Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando, and SeaWorld, draws millions of families from around the world. Agriculture is the second-largest sector, with Florida producing most of the citrus fruit grown in the United States, along with sugarcane, tomatoes, strawberries, and celery. The state also leads in powerboat sales and phosphate mining. Notably, the world’s first scheduled commercial airline flight took place in Florida on January 1, 1914, marking the start of modern air travel.

Florida offers a rich blend of landmarks and lifestyle opportunities. Major attractions include Adventure Island in Tampa, a 30-acre water park; the American Police Hall of Fame and Museum, dedicated to fallen law enforcement officers; and the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach. The state’s natural beauty shines through parks like the Everglades and beaches stretching from the Florida Keys to Pensacola. Florida is one of seven states without a personal income tax, which means more savings for residents. With its warm climate, strong economy, and endless recreational options, it’s a paradise for both families and retirees. Politically, Florida leans Republican, and the state continues to attract people from all over the world looking for sunshine, opportunity, and a vibrant lifestyle.
