It's not much bigger than a credit card. And it's not even green but has bits of beige and
blue. But the USA's so-called Green Card, also known as the Permanent Resident Card, is
easily more sought after than any credit card in the world. Millions of people from
countries all over the world compete to get the Green Card. Why? Because it is proof that
they have legally migrated to the United States and can live and work wherever in the USA
they wish.
Why green then? Because once upon a time in the 1950s, there was no card at all. Immigrants
paid an Alien Registration fee and received a receipt for it. Printed on green paper.
The Green Card Lottery, created by the US Immigration Act of 1990, is how the United States open
its door to immigrants from countries that are not very well represented in the country's ethnic
salad of diversity. If you are from one of these countries and can meet a few other straightforward
but strict conditions, you can enter the Green Card Lottery.
Each year's lottery is identified by a short code consisting of the letters 'DV' followed by the
year by which selected winners must enter the United States. To enter the US in that year, you
should have participated in the lottery two years earlier. The current lottery is DV-2025, so
registration for the Green Card Lottery will take place in 2023.
Believe it or not, on of the most popular ways to get a Green Card is by leaving it to chance and
registering for the annual Green Card Lottery
The list of qualifying countries participating in the Diversity Visa Program changes yearly, depending on how many immigrants there are from a particular country.
In the interactive map below, people born in countries with less than 50,000 immigrants moving to the United States over the previous five years are automatically eligible (Green Countries).
Suppose your country is ineligible to participate in the Diversity Visa Program (Red Countries). In that case, it is because the United States has received more than 50,000 immigrants over the previous five years from your country. In that case, please check back next year as the qualifying country list is updated from year to year.
In which country are you born?
It depends. You cannot influence whether your name comes up in the lottery draw. However, many people trip themselves because of human errors they could have easily avoided.
For example --
Forgetting to apply: The window is for receiving registration stays open for just 4 to 5 weeks in
October and November. Since the US Department of State does not advertise, it's up to you to keep
checking their website.
Not completing the DS-260 form: If you win the Green Card Lottery, you are to complete and submit the
DS-260 online form -- in exactly 60 minutes. If you fail, your form is deleted and you must start again. Many
try and try -- but don't succeed.
Completing the visa too late: With the Diversity Visa, it's first come first served. Though more
than 125,000 people are selected in the Green Card Lottery, only the first 50,000 to submit valid
applications will receive the visa. Many lose just by applying for the visa too late.
Making errors in the form: Even a single error in the form is enough to disqualify you. For
instance perhaps the photo you uploaded did not exactly match the US photo guidelines.
Not meeting the immigration requirements: Some lose out even after winning the lottery because
they do not meet some immigration requirement.
Almost half of those selected in the lottery fail to get the Diversity Visa because they filled the
online application form incorrreclty.
