FLORIDA

Florida, popularly known as the Sunshine state is the 3rd largest state in the United States of America with the total are of 65,755 square miles and a population of 23.381 million people according to 2024 census. Florida is located in the south-eastern part of the United States of America. Florida was known to enter the union on the 3rd of March, 1845. It official flag was adopted in 1990. Florida’s flag has a red cross of St. Andrew on a white background in the center is the state seal, which represents a Native American woman scattering flowers, the sun, palm trees, a sailing steamboat, the land and the water.

The state share borders with Alabama and Georgia in the north, Gulf of Mexico in the west, Atlantic Ocean in the east and with Straits of Florida and the sovereign state of Cuba at the south. Tallahassee is the state capital while Jacksonville is the most populous city in Florida. The state got its name from the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon who named it La Florida which means The Flowery upon landing there in the Easter period. Florida gained it statehood in the United States in 1845.

Today, Florida is distinctively known for its large Cuban expatriate community and high population growth. The states economy relies mainly on tourism, agriculture and transportation which were developed in the late 19th century. Florida is also known for amusement parks, orange crops, the Kennedy Space Centre and as a popular destination for retirees. Tourism makes up one of the largest sectors in the state economy, with nearly 1.2 million persons employed in the tourism industry in 2015. Many beach towns are popular tourist destinations especially during winter and spring break. Amusement parks like Greater Orlando area, Walt Disney World Resort make up significant portion of tourism with over 50million visitors annually. Agriculture is the second largest industry in the state. Florida produces the majority of citrus fruit grown in the United State. Other products include sugarcane, tomatoes, strawberries and celery. Florida is also the leading state for the sales of power boats; phosphate mining is the state third largest industry with its concentration in the Bone valley. The world’s first scheduled commercial airline flight occurred in Florida on January 1, 1914.

Landmarks in Florida includes Adventure Island; which is made up of 30 acres of land containing a blend of water rides, picnic outdoor cafes, and sunbathing areas and gift shops, American Police Hall of Fame and Museum; established in 1960 is the nation’s first national police museum and memorial which was dedicated to American law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, Bas Museum of Art, Channel side, Eureka Springs Park Arcadia Municipal Airport, New castle county, The good thing about living in Florida is that the state is one of the seven states that do not impose personal income tax which equates to more money in your pocket. It is also a popular tourist destination and also have unlimited recreational activities. Florida is a state that is dominated by republicans, so if you are a republican, Florida is a place for you to live.
